Things you may want to know about cosplay

This time I will share tips for new cosplayers and new friends who want to play. But before that, of course, we need to know first; actually what is the definition or meaning of COSPLAY? Apart from that, don’t forget to check out the Youmacon schedule.

According to Wikipedia (I translate it with words that are easier to understand and I add my version of words to make them easy to understand too):

Cosplay, short for “costume play” is a type of performance art in which participants (called cosplayers) wear costumes and accessories to represent certain characters. These characters are most often based on Japanese characters (eg Naruto, Sailormoon, Doraemon, Bleach, etc.), but not infrequently too, those characters come from American cartoons/comics/films (Hollywood) and even science fiction characters. In short, it can come from any character; both from the world of animation, cartoons, comics, manga, manhwa, films, games, virtual, graphic novels, and so on.

The term cosplayer itself is a term for people who play.

Cosplay usually is divided into several categories based on the source of the cosplayed characters:

Categories of anime, manga, manhwa: this is certainly clear. Cosplay in this category uses characters from Japanese anime and manga (Japanese comics). For example Naruto Uzumaki from the Naruto manga, or Nobita Nobi from the Doraemon anime, or even Gundam Exia from the Gundam 00 anime. Examples of manhwa are Tiger Wong, Tapak Sakti, etc.

Game category: is a cosplay that uses characters from any console games. For example Cloud Strife from the Final Fantasy VII game, or Mishima Kazuya from the Tekken game.

Tokusatsu category: is cosplay by using characters from the Tokusatsu series. Included in this are the Kamen Rider, Ultraman, Sentai (Power Ranger included) series, Gavan, Sharivan, and so on.

The US Cosplay category: cosplay by using characters from US superheroes such as Iron Man, Wonder Woman, Superman, Robocop, and so on.
Other categories: those included in this category can be from films, novels, and so on. For example Jack Sparrow from the film Pirates of the Caribean.

Original category: actually this category only exists in South-East Asia, it’s in Indonesia to be exact. We can have ideas to create our own character creation. We draw, we specify the characteristics of the character, then we cosplay.
